Bad Cholesterol Causes Heart Disease

Bad Cholesterol Causes Heart Disease - Scientists have found new evidence related to other types of bad cholesterol, which apparently contributed to the occurrence of heart disease
Unlike cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL / low density lipoprotein cholesterol), which has many known and unknown, Lipoprotein (a) or Lp (a) can not be controlled by dietary lipid lowering statin drugs or swallowing food. However, researchers have argued the high levels of Lp (a) is lower risk than high LDL levels.
Other drugs are also thought to be working to minimize its effect. Study results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine on its latest issue.

LDL, known to be very aggressive in “attacking” the arteries and increases the risk of heart disease. The scientists believe that Lp (a) which are derived not “fierce” LDL cholesterol, but it may cause blockage of blood vessels.
In examining Lp (a), the researchers used genetic chip technology to scan the DNA that is a potential point for risk of heart disease that they know from previous studies.
Professor Martin Farrall, team members conducted research at Oxford University on Saturday (26/12), say, one in six people carry one or more genes Lp (a).
“Hopefully, with a target of therapy, both for LDL and Lp (a), we can find the best way to reduce heart disease risk better,” says Martin Farrall.

He said the increased risk of high levels of Lp (a) it is still lower than people with high LDL. Drugs that exist now, such as niacin and other species that will go into the market such as CETP-inhibitors reduce Lp (a), as well as LDL.
Professor Peter Weissberg British Heart Foundation, said the discovery was very useful because it emphasizes the importance of reducing levels of Lp (a) which will lead to new efforts. However, LDL cholesterol remains the primary type that must be considered.
